Let's start learning Korean and Korean culture through a 7-panel comic!

We've prepared something that learners of all levels, from Elementary to Intermediate to Advanced, can enjoy. Don't know Korean? Then just enjoy the culture! English translations are also provided.

Ugh~

Today's topic is culture and examples of buzzwords becoming expressions of everyday life. However, since this kind of culture is a concept that does not exist in English-speaking countries, it was very difficult to find an appropriate English expression. If you want to know what it is, scroll down!

📖 Key Words in Comics

- 부먹: Short for 부어서 먹다(Pour and eat)

- 찍먹: Short for 찍어서 먹다(Dip and eat)

- 탕수육: Tang-su-yuk(Korean sweet and sour pork)

- 당연히: Of course

🎁 Extra Expressions

Pourers(부먹파) vs. Dippers(찍먹파)

An issue that has been heating up across Korea since the late 2010s: Pouring(Pourer) vs. Dipping(Dipper)!

It all started with 탕수육.

People's preferences were divided over two ways of enjoying this dish:

- 부먹: Pouring the sauce over the crispy fried pork (Pour and eat)

- 찍먹: Dipping the pork into the sauce without pouring (Dip and eat)

These preferences have split into distinct groups and have now become common terminology in everyday life.

In addition, those who prefer to pour are called Pourers(부먹파), and those who prefer to dip are called Dippers(찍먹파).

So, from now on, if you're dining with someone and there comes a time to add sauce, try asking, "부먹이에요? 찍먹이에요?” 😀.
